Some of the history of Friends, for your interest.
Explorit (once known as the Davis Science Center!) first opened its doors in April 1982 - for a week-long series of vacation classes. The Davis community responded with enthusiasm then, and has continued to do so as the Center has grown and evolved. That enthusiasm is now shared by a much wider community as programs routinely travel into ten surrounding counties.
The Center has grown in size and in professionalism but its core beliefs remain the same, which is a strong tribute to the validity of its mission and to today's staff who carry it out.
Perhaps you are a new visitor to our website, or have known about Explorit for a while, or have already expressed support for Explorit's mission in various ways over the years, in any case we want to draw your attention to a new 'arm' of Explorit founded in 1998 by Ethel Sassenrath when she finally retired from the Board after 14 years of service.
Ethel created and is President of Friends of Explorit which works to further Explorit's education mission and provide auxiliary/ancillary services to support the work of Board and Staff. Friends are members of Explorit and pay Explorit's annual 'dues.' In addition most who become Friends agree to make an annual donation to the Auxiliary to help accomplish the group's supportive tasks.
Some Friends are supportive simply through their annual contributions, others work actively on teams such as the Scholarship, Library, Garden, Hospitality, and Mailing Party teams. Meetings of Friends as a unit are rare while the teams are kept comfortably busy doing things that relieve staff of many crucial but peripheral things.
If you are already a member of Explorit, would you like to join Friends of Explorit in support of the Science Center's education mission: "to involve people in science experiences that touch our lives?" We do hope so.
