CLUB NEWS

Our deep sympathies go out to the family and friends of long-time Astronomy Club host Dennis Smith who died peacefully in his home on January 4, 2003 after a battle with cancer. Dennis established the science center's astronomy club in 1986 and was its inspiration and host for 15 years. His legacy will be continued by volunteers following in his footsteps.

What To Observe In The Winter Sky
The first Astronomy Club program of 2003 will be held on Saturday January 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Explorit Science Center.
At this program we will watch part of the video "Jack Horkheimer: Star Hustler, Video Almanac". In this video, Jack Horkheimer, host of the popular PBS television series Star Gazer (formerly Star Hustler) teaches viewers a little about what they can see in the night sky each month and season of the year. At this meeting we will view the four episodes that deal with the winter sky. These episodes include:
Winter: A Sensational Celestial Six Pack. This episode teaches viewers to locate seven of the twenty brightest stars in the night sky. These stars make up the winter hexagon.
December: The Cross And The Manger: A Christmas Gift From The Stars. This episode teaches viewers to locate the constellation Cygnus (the swan, or the northern cross) and the star cluster Praesepe.
January: Incredible Castor, The Sensational Sibling. This episode teaches viewers to locate the constellation Gemini and focuses on the incredible "star" Castor.
February: Three Stars You'll Love To Pronounce: Alnitak, Alnilam And Mintaka. This episode teaches viewers to locate the constellation Orion and focuses on the belt stars.
If the sky is clear, we will have the opportunity to go outside and locate some or all of these star patterns and to do some star gazing with telescopes. If the sky is not clear, we will view another astronomy video.
I hope to see you at Explorit on Saturday January 25 at 7:30 p.m. for this informative program presented by the Explorit Astronomy Club. This program is free and offered to the general public.
