"Count Your Lucky Stars and Comets"

Sat. March 10, 7:00 p.m. at 3141 5th St.
The Davis Astronomy Club at Explorit will host a program on comets at 7 p,m Saturday, March 10, at the 5th Street Explorit site in which we will learn about a comet's composition and origin, and when we might expect to see the next big one. After the program, we will adjourn to the outdoors to participate in the "Globe at Night" star count, in which participants count the number of stars in the constellation Orion that they can see. Sponsored by Globe (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment), the Globe at Night program is a means of tracking light pollution over time. You can also observe and report from your own backyard or any open space where you can see Orion any night from now to March 21. A family packet for the Globe At Night program is available on-line at www.globe.gov/GaN. Telescopes will also be available for viewing. Explorit Astronomy Club meetings are open to the public.

Lecture by author Kim Stanley Robinson

Sat. May 5, 8:00 p.m.
Davis author Kim Stanley Robinson will talk about the concept of "terraforming" making planets livable in a free lecture sponsored by the Davis Astronomy Club at Explorit. The talk will be at 8 p.m. May 5 in the upstairs Gumerlock Gallery at Explorit Science Center, 2801 Second St. Robinson wrote the popular Mars Trilogy: "Red Mars," "Green Mars" and "Blue Mars") in the 1990s. His lecture will focus on this: How could humans transform a cold dry desert planet such as Mars to make it habitable for human beings? As Robinson's characters changed Mars and themselves over a long time to make it possible to live there, we can consider applying the same concepts to Earth to keep it habitable.
