Kids' Science Challenge #9

Stumper Question:
Enzymes are present in all living biological systems. They are catalysts (that is: they speed up chemical processes without themselves being changed or destroyed). Each type of enzyme is very specific in its effect.

Which of the following enzymes present in the human digestive tract facilitates the digestion of fats:
pepsin, trypsin, lipase, or amylase?

Answer:   LIPASE
Lipase is made in the pancreas and acts on fats as the food passes along the duodenum. It breaks complex fat molecules into glycerol and fatty acids. These smaller molecules can be absorbed through the wall of the small intestine, enter the blood stream, and be distributed to cells around the body.
