Stumper Question:
A simple sugar molecule has 24 (twenty four) atoms in each molecule. What three different kinds of atoms are there in such a molecule of sugar?

Answer: Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen

Sugars are carbohydrates. The name carbohydrate suggests the composition of the compound:
"carbo..." indicates the presence of carbon;
"hydr..." suggests the presence of hydrogen, and
"...ate" commonly indicates the presence of oxygen.

The molecular makeup of a simple sugar is six atoms of carbon, twelve atoms of hydrogen, and six atoms of oxygen. The chemical formula for one molecule of a simple sugar is written like this: C6H12O6
