Visit Explorit as part of region's 9th annual Museum Day

On Saturday, Explorit Science Center will join members of the Sacramento Association of Museums in hosting the ninth annual Museum Day. Admission is free at all 25 participating museums.

Families in the greater Sacramento area are invited to visit as many museums as they would like on this special day. All will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Most, including Explorit, will have special activities. Guests must arrive at their final museum site no later than 4 p.m. Explorit’s Museum Day events will make up a Family Festival that will take place at the center’s new site, 2801 Second St. in Davis.

Explorit will highlight its current exhibition, “From Codes to Crystals: Patterns All Around.” Visitors will be able to write a message in Braille with a Perkins Brailler, find patterns in music as they play a song on a keyboard, and even find out why geese fly in a “V” formation. These activities plus dozens of other activities are part of the exhibition, which runs through March 11.

Megan Chiosso, Explorit’s public programs coordinator and facilitator of this event, is looking forward to it. “I am most excited about displaying a sample of the variety of programs we have here at Explorit, as well as seeing children of all ages engage in hands-on science activities,” she said. Adults may try their hand at problem-solving in the Challenge Corner of the Discovery Room. From touching sheep lungs to using a diffraction grating, the experience will be first-hand.

Most activities are samples from Explorit’s mobile programs, which last year engaged more than 50,000 students and adults alike at schools and other locations. From the Health in Your World program, guests can learn the length of their intestines, for example. Activities from the Classroom Adventures “Explorations in Energy” program will be set up on the Grand Plaza Patio. Activities exploring the life cycles of different animals and plants will be available from Explorit’s Discovery Lab, a field-trip program.

Explorit’s special activities on Saturday will run from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. More information on Museum Day, including maps and a list of participating museums, is available at www.sacmuseums.org.
