Explorit entering new season and new set of programs

Explorit is shifting gears in the next few weeks, finishing up a school year's worth of field trips and traveling programs - and preparing to host more than 400 children in Summer Science Camp '09.

Our three big vans, which take our science programs to schools in 18 counties from September through mid-June, will take a summer's break, but that definitely won't be the case for the staff. Daily camp from June 15 through Aug. 21 keep all staff and about 40 volunteers busy. A few openings for campers remain - check the list at www.explorit.org (enter “Summer Camp” in the search field).

As the seasons change, so do Explorit's Changing Exhibitions. Our upstairs Gumerlock Gallery is closed right now as we set up our summer Changing Exhibition, “I Wonder.” It opens on June 6 and is built entirely on questions that we collected from the public over the past year.

Our annual appreciation party is next Friday night (June 5) from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at our museum on Second Street. Guests can dine on pizza (complements of Woodstock's), meet our Summer Camp educators and get a preview of the 'I Wonder” exhibition.

If you're not currently a member, come to the party check out what our membership has to offer - including unlimited admission to Explorit and free or reduced admission to science museums throughout the country during your summer travels. A 10 percent discount for membership will be available at the event.

Fall season brings a new set of Changing Exhibitions. For 2009-10, the lineup looks like this:

• “Communication! Coming in Loud and Clear,” Sept. 19 - Nov. 29.
Insects release pheromones, flowers attract pollinators, and humans chat on cell phones. Communication is critical for survival. Examine animal colors and sounds, the history of human communication, and the technology that is changing the way we connect.

• ”What's Out There? Exploring Our Universe,” Dec. 12 - Feb. 22, 2010.
Contrary to its name, space is not empty. Investigate the planets and other objects in our solar system and find out what lies beyond. Follow the lead of astronauts and astronomers by exploring the wonders of space and the complexity of our universe.

• “Wild Planet,” March 6 - May 23, 2010.
From the ocean depths to the highest peaks, Earth is a dynamic planet. Discover how earthquakes and volcanoes shape the landscape and explore strange creatures adapted to survive in the harshest environments. You're in for a “wild” ride.

• “Take Matter Into Your Own Hands,” June 5 - August 29.
Everything is made of matter. Examine its nature, from pure elements to the most complex molecules. Delve into the different states of matter and investigate the properties of various materials. Who knew “stuff” could be so much fun?

Downstairs in the Jonsson Family Gallery, the “Move It! Science in Action” exhibition is continuing.

Today is Allison Cagley's last day at Explorit. She has served as our director of development since 2004, seeing the center through its expansion into our building on Second Street.

Under her guidance, the center raised more than $1.7 million in its capital campaign. She also reached or exceeded her annual fund-raising goals every year, and wrapped up her tenure here on a high note with the announcement of a $200,000 grant from Bank of America.

“Allison has been a teacher, a motivator and an inspiration to everyone who has come to know her and to respect her,” said Lou Ziskind, executive director. “Her exceptional work will long be remembered by our community for making Explorit Science Center a true learning center for children and their families. We wish her much success and enjoyment in her future.”

Allison is leaving Explorit to take a position at the California Musical Theatre, closer to her Sacramento home.
