Explorit Science Center invites visitors to "Go Fly a Kite" this weekend. On Sunday Explorit will host a kite-making workshop and present a hands-on "Meet the Scientist" program.

At 2:00 p.m., Jacob Blickenstaff, a physics and physical science teacher, will present a family program about the science of flight. Jacob will explain how kites and airplanes fly using interactive demonstrations and hands-on activities.

This "Meet the Scientist" presentation will be targeted at elementary-age students, but visitors can expect to be introduced to important concepts such as the Bernoulli effect.

Jacob Blickenstaff currently teaches at Galt High School and received his undergraduate degree from UC Davis in 1992. A big fan of Bill Nye the Science Guy, Jacob is sure to have a presentation which is stimulating and fun!

Also on Sunday, visitors will be able to further explore and apply their understanding of the physics of flight by making kites.

From 1:00-4:00 p.m., Explorit will host a kite workshop for completing, perfecting or starting kite projects. The workshop was created to assist novice or master kite builders in creating their entries for the WindWorks Kitemaking Competition, but anyone interested in making a kite may participate.

Admission to the workshop and a limited supply of materials will be provided free on a first come, first serve basis. Staff from Explorit and the Davis Art Center be on hand to will provide hints, help and explanations.

Designers may enter their completed masterpieces in the WindWorks Kitemaking Competition by submitting them to the Davis Art Center by May 10, 5:00 p.m. Kites will be judged in two categories: technical merit and artistic merit. Entry is free and participants may collaborate. All entries will be displayed on May 18, during the WindWorks Kite Festival at the Davis Art Center.

"Your Home and the Science Inside It" opens Saturday. The new exhibition features activities which explore everyday science.

Your home is a dynamic laboratory for the applications of chemistry and physics. Explorit activities will explore familiar and unfamiliar parts of our household environment--from a-frames to zithers.

Visitors to this exhibition can investigate refrigerator biochemistry, simple machines, building engineering, and principles of sound, light and heat.

Saturday's admission is free. Public hours are: Saturday 11:00-4:30 p.m., Sunday 1:00-4:30 p.m., Tuesday-Friday 2:00-4:30 p.m. Regular admission is $3. Members, teachers and children under four are free. Call 756-0191 for more information.

Explorit would like to thank the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity for their generous help on Tuesday, April 23. Thanks to their hard work, the new Native Plant Gardens are closer to completion and Explorit's quarterly newsletter, Science Centered, is ready to be delivered to all of Explorit's anxious members.

Explorit also thanks all of it's generous cash donors, including Hunt-Wesson. Corporations such as Hunt-Wesson, who support Explorit programs year-after-year, are valuable and vital to Explorit.

Planning for the 1996-97 Cutting Edge Lecture Series is underway. Professors, researchers and professionals from UC Davis, corporations and other educational institutions are encouraged to become part of this fun, informative series.

If you are, or know, someone who can present their "cutting edge" research in an informal, exciting manner, please call Explorit at 756-0191.
