Come to Explorit Science Center for California Indian Skills & Crafts Day! This Saturday, November 30, Explorit invites you to investigate and explore activities of the Patwin and other Northern California Indians. Be there when Explorit opens at 11:00 am to prepare acorn mush. Who knows -- you might even like it better than oatmeal! Then, at noon, UC Davis researchers will speak about native fishes and fishing skills and tools used by local native peoples. Perhaps this will give you that extra needed "oomph" to reel in that prize fish -- the one that got away last year. And just in case that fish manages to slip away again, you can learn how to make a traditional berry basket and cordage at 1:00 pm so you don't go hungry.

These activities are funded by a grant from the California Council for the Humanities, which also provided major funding for our exhibition, "Tools to Live By: Patwin Hunting & Gathering." If you haven't seen "Tools" yet, hurry in, because this is the last weekend of the exhibition.

On Monday, Dec. 2 through Friday, Dec. 6, Explorit will be closed to the public while the new exhibition, "Bigger Than a Breadbox: Estimation and Measurement," is installed. On Saturday, Dec. 7, Explorit will be open again for regular public hours.

Explorit Science Center is located at 3141 5th Street in East Davis. Public hours are Saturday from 11 am to 4:30 pm, Sunday from 1:00 to 4:30 pm, and Tuesday through Friday from 2:00 to 4:30 pm.

Regular admission is $3; members, teachers, and children under 4 are free. For more information, call Explorit at 756-0191.

Winter Science Classes are starting to fill up. Don't let your child's vacation be less than adventurous. While you do your holiday shopping and after-Christmas returns, let your child explore the spellbinding world of science.

Why are birds of prey unique? Have you ever seen a raptor up close? What's the difference between a falcon and a hawk? Find out in "Raptor Rap", just one of the Winter Science Classes offered this winter vacation.

Classes are for children in grades 1-6 and will be held on selected days from December 23 to January 3. Classes for grades 1-2 will be from 9:00-10:30 am, and classes for grades 3-6 will be from 11 am-12:30 pm. For more information or to receive a registration form, stop by Explorit, or call 756-0191.
