Afternoon Science Adventures at Explorit

By Lisa Justice

Special to the Enterprise

Kicking off in March are our brand-new Afternoon Science Adventures for students Kindergarten through 6th grade.  Join us for one or more of these exciting, month-long adventures!  These project-based workshops will meet every Wednesday afternoon (except March 26) from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Explorit.

For Kindergarten through 2nd-grade students we’ll be offering Plantacular! in March. From the secrets of soil to the nutrients of light, explore with us what it takes for plants to grow and thrive in different conditions.  What are plants made of and how do they work?  Do all plants need the same conditions to stay healthy?  How can plants make up for not getting enough of what they need?

And for these students in April it’ll be all about the animal kingdom with Animal Antics. From spinning webs to stalking prey, animals in our world are up to all kinds of interesting things!  Join us as we observe and explore the behaviors of local wildlife and discover how our scaled, feathered and furry neighbors eat, sleep and get around.

But we won’t leave out our friends in 3rd-6th grades!  In March they’ll find out Why Time Flies. Take a trip through time with us as we investigate how we measure the days of our lives and our earth.  Learn to tell time without a clock, make a sundial, and get a whole new perspective on how quickly (or slowly!) time passes.

And in April 3rd-6th-graders will explore the effects of drought in Thirsty Thistles. All plants need water, but how much?  And what happens when there isn’t enough water?  Get a plant’s-eye view of ground water, drought, and the weather in this exploration of how we need, how we get and how we use one of our most important resources—water!

Each camp features ongoing projects and plenty of hands-on science fun to ignite your curiosity!  March camps are $185 for members, $240 for nonmembers.  April camps are $240 for members, $290 for nonmembers.
