August may bring the end of summer and back-to-school, but it also brings some amazing opportunities for science adventures with Explorit for the whole family. Mark your calendars now for our Perseid Meteor Shower Viewing, Family Science Night at Explorit and Summer Science (Family) Celebration!

We kick things off at the height of this year’s Perseid Meteor Shower with a viewing party on Sunday, August 12 at Fairfield Elementary School (26960 County Rd. 96), 7:00-10:00 p.m. The Davis Astronomy Club will have telescopes for viewing different night-sky features.

But no telescope is required to catch the many meteors shooting across the sky at a rate of more than one per minute. Bring a blanket and a picnic, Explorit will provide some hands-on astronomy activities and the heavens will provide the rest. This event is free, but donations to help cover the cost of facilities rental will be gratefully accepted.

Then don’t miss Saturday, August 18, 6:30-8:00 p.m. when one of Explorit’s flagship traveling programs comes home for a very special night of science in our museum. Explorit’s traveling Family Science Nights visit scores of schools in dozens of Northern and Central California counties each year.

But on August 18 you can catch it in Explorit’s museum gallery--dozens of hands-on science activities supporting the Next Generation Science Standards and rarely seen in our museum. This event is $5 for members, $7 for non-members, children 2 and under are free.

And that’s not all! The fun will continue into September with our Summer Science (Family) Celebration on Saturday, September 8, 5:00-8:00 p.m. Meet live animals from Lindsay Wildlife Experience, catch the U.C. Davis Chemistry show, and much more. This event is $5 for members, $7 for non-members, children 2 and under are free.

Explorit’s coming events:

●      Visit our Feathers exhibition! Explorit’sExploration Gallery is open to the public every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 1:00-5:00 p.m.  Admission is $5.00 per person; Explorit members, teachers and children 2 and under are free.

●      Consider a donation to Explorit. Now more than ever, we need science education. Your donations help Explorit serve our community with exhibits, activities and educational outreach programs in 15 surrounding counties. Sponsor a program or summer camp scholarships by making a gift at, or call us for more details.

●      Be an informal science educator for a day! Explorit is looking for volunteers to accompany our educators into classrooms during the day and assist with presenting hands-on science to school children. If this sounds like you, please fill out a volunteer application at
