Explorit Launches Nature Bowl Team

Join Explorit’s Nature Bowl team!

On the table is a tote bag. The tote bag contains five stuffed animals. You and your team mates have sixty seconds to arrange these animals into a commonly occurring food chain and identify the region where this food chain would be found. Are these animals from the Sierra foothills? Or delta wetlands? Or maybe an oak savannah?

If this sounds like a fun challenge to you and you happen to be in 3rd through 6th grade, you are an excellent candidate for Explorit Science Center’s Nature Bowl team this year!

Nature Bowl is an annual science based educational program for 3rd – 6th graders that increases ecological knowledge and conservation literacy. Now in its 31st year, the program is coordinated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife in partnership with more than a dozen nature and environmental organizations.

Each year teams of third- and fourth- or fifth- and sixth-graders compete at different semi-finals sites, including at the Yolo Basin Foundation, for a spot at the state finals on the CSU Sacramento campus in May. Teams prepare for competition by drafting enviromercials, one-minute presentations on an environmental issue in California’s central valley including causes, effects and solutions.

Participation in Nature Bowl boosts understanding of the natural world and wise use of its resources. In team settings, students eagerly learn about the environment while building teamwork skills and sharpening their creative and critical thinking abilities. The program’s curriculum corresponds with California’s “Next Generation” Science Standards, which makes it a popular event for teachers and educators.

The Nature Bowl challenges students to think about the ecology of central California while considering human responses to a range of environmental issues from wild fires to highway construction. Students are encouraged to think innovatively about solutions to environmental problems and take action at the local level.  Nature Bowl participants don’t just learn about conservation; they practice it.

Explorit is thrilled to be a part of encouraging the next generation of environmental scientists and conservation enthusiasts! We have a dynamic team of coaches, including three teenage mentors who have competed at Nature Bowl in the past and are eager to coach up-and-coming Nature Bowlers this year.

Joining Explorit’s team is easy, and is open to all 3rd-6th graders. You can register online at www.exploritnaturebowl.brownpapertickets.com. Your $20 registration fee covers all supplies for the entire year, plus a t-shirt! Nature Bowl meets Thursdays in Explorit’s West Wing classroom, 3:30-4:30 p.m. beginning October 1. Don’t miss out on your chance to be a part of this amazing nature adventure!
