Explorit's December Workshops Add Science to the Season

Explorit’s popular Winter Workshops are back for the last two weeks of December, and we’ve got some really special science planned. From the frozen wonder of a snowflake to the molten sweetness of a cup of hot chocolate, there will be lots to explore and enjoy.

We kick off our December workshops with Science or Magic? on Monday, December 21. You won’t believe your eyes as we transfigure pennies, use physics to make objects disappear and even change the color of flame with chemistry.

Then on Tuesday, December 22 we’ll explore the Winter Solstice with special guest Paul Ulbrich who will help us make sundials and learn how to track the changing seasons and even the time of day with our shadows.

Get Crazy about Caribou on Wednesday, December 23 in this workshop that’s all about an amazing member of the deer family. Majestic caribou have some amazing adaptations that help them survive in some of the coldest climates on earth. Join us to explore their diet, antlers, hooves and more.

On Monday, December 28 we’ll let it snow with Snowy Science. We’ll explore the science behind this favorite winter phenomenon, and even make our own snowmen to take home!

Or join the Penguin Party on Tuesday, December 29. Get inspired by the behavior and adaptations of these amazing birds and discover what scientists can learn from studying them.

Dip into the Chocolate Lab on Wednesday, December 30 to whip up a treat or two while exploring different states of matter. We’ll harness the power of chemistry to transform different types of chocolate into amazing things to eat and drink. We may even invent some new recipes of our own!

Each workshop is $30 for members of Explorit, $35 for non-members and open to children ages 5-12. Enroll the same student in 4 workshops, and get a $20 discount. Each workshop runs from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Plus, this year we have a very special two-day event for science enthusiasts ages 12 and up. Explorit Science Center and the Sacramento Drone Meet-up Group present Drones 101: Introduction to Safe and Fun Sky-Trekking on Monday and Tuesday, December 21 and 22 from 1:30-3:30 at Explorit.

This two-day workshop will begin with an introduction to the concept of drones, and will move on to the physics of flight, exploring safety in more detail, as well as current rules and regulations. Along the way, we’ll also explore careers in drone-related fields, the important legal aspects of flying drones, and how drones are being used today.

The cost for the Drone workshop is $80 for students ages 12-18 and $110 for those 19 and older. Explorit members receive a 10% discount.

Registration for all workshops is open now! Call Explorit to register at 530-756-0191.
