Get ready for Summer Science Camps

By Sara Thompson

Special to the Enterprise

Explorit Science Center will once again be having Summer Science Camp this year!  We have morning camps from 8:45am-12pm for kids entering Kindergarten all the way up to entering 6th grade.  We will also have one week of an evening teen camp for grades 6-10 in June.  Each of our morning camps will be offered twice through the summer, so if one date does not work for you, check to see if the other date will work.

Our first offering for the summer is Animal Adventures for kids entering grades K-2.  Come explore Mace Ranch Park, and learn which wild animals call it home.  Spend time using all of your senses to help to help you observe the behaviors of the various animals that we encounter.  Learn to track and locate animals using signs that they leave behind.  We will also meet, and spend time observing various reptiles, amphibians, insects, and arachnids that call Explorit home.  This camp is offered the weeks of June 15-19, and July 20-24.

What forces help shape our earth?  Our Earth Explorations camp is for kids entering grades K-4.  Come learn how wind and rain can change a mounting, watch how water changes the landscape, and build a structure that can survive our earthquake shake table.  Learn how geologists study rocks and minerals, and how fossils can help us look into the past.  This camp is offered the weeks of June 22-26 and July 27-31.

For our older school aged kids we have Wild and Wonderful Animal Behavior for those entering grades 3-6.  Come learn more about animals and their behavior.  Take an in depth look at how animals survive in Mace Ranch Park and elsewhere.  How do they acquire food, water, and shelter, while coexisting with their human neighbors?  Why do some animals thrive in the park/neighborhood, while others stay away?  We will also meet, and spend time observing the various reptiles, amphibians, insects, and arachnids that call Explorit home.  This camp is offered the weeks of July 6-10 and August 3-7.

Also, for those entering grades 4-6 we have Map It!  Mapping, geocaching, and orienteering, Oh My!  Campers will learn how to read a compass, maps, and how to orient themselves.  They will search for and discover a nearby geocache, and will also make their own map of Mace Ranch Park!  This camp is offered the weeks of July 13-17 and August 10-14.

Lastly, we have one evening camp for students entering grades 6-10, To the Stars and Beyond!  Explore the wonders of the universe from the sun, moon, and planets in our solar system to the stars, galaxies, and black holes in the vastness beyond in this engaging hands-on astronomy, rocketry, and stargazing experience!  This camp is offered the week of June 22-26 only!  Camp will run from 5-8pm Monday-Thursday, and 6-10pm on Friday.

Our registration is already open and there are still plenty of spaces available.  Register online at, or give us a call at (530) 756-0191.  Camp prices are $125 for Members/$150 for Non-Members.  All camps will be held at Explorit Science Center, 3141 5th St., in Davis.  Campers are required to bring their own snack, water bottle, and wear closed toed shoes.  Each camp will also have portions take place outside, so please plan accordingly with sunscreen applications and hats.
