Giving Thanks for Science with Explorit’s November Workshops

If the changing leaves of autumn or the seemingly magical transformations happening in a busy holiday kitchen make you wonder about the science happening all around us in our daily lives, then Explorit’s November workshops are for you! Coming Thanksgiving week to your local science center, these workshops are a fun and festive way to celebrate the season with science.

On Monday, November 24 we’ll be turning ordinary pumpkins into extraordinary centerpieces for a nature-filled holiday table. But that’s not all! We’ll delve into the science of pumpkins by measuring their weight, examining their anatomy, and subjecting them to the float or sink test.

We’ll put all of our senses to work as we explore all aspects of the pumpkin, and compare them to other fruits and vegetables. Follow the development of a pumpkin seed through its life cycle, and enjoy a tasty pumpkin seed treat that we’ll roast together! Plus, each workshop participant will construct a seasonal centerpiece to take home.

Tuesday, November 25 will find us in the kitchen engaging in the age-old practice of canning. We’ll use the process of making apple butter to learn about food safety, food preservation methods and the microorganisms that can hitch a ride with our snacks. Each participant will head home with a jar of their very own apple butter!

Our fascination with nature continues on Wednesday, November 26 as we complete our Thanksgiving table décor with nature-inspired items. Our main project will be to make natural dyes from fruits, vegetables and spices, then use them to design custom cloth napkins.  Each workshop participant will take home a set of cloth napkins they have dyed themselves!

Our November series of workshops will wrap up on Friday, November 28 when we’ll turn Black Friday into Technicolor Friday! We’ll explore the amazing world of color with light and optics by making rainbow kaleidoscopes to take home.  Find out what color light is and discover how astronomers use color to learn about the stars.

We also have December workshops coming up for the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s.  Visit www.explorit.org for a full list of workshops with dates and topics.

Each workshop runs from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The cost is $30 for members and $35 for non-members. Register for four days and receive a $20 discount, or register two or more children for the same day and receive a $5 discount per day.

Registration is open now and spots are going quickly, so call Explorit at 530-756-0191 to reserve yours now! Workshops are designed for children 5-12 years old; parents are welcome to attend with their children, or children may be dropped off and picked up by noon.
