Here’s to Healthy Holidays

This article appeared in the November 19, 2010 edition of the Davis Enterprise.

By Liz Shenaut
Special to the Enterprise

From March through October, Woodland Healthcare-Davis sponsored Explorit’s health-and body-related booths at Picnic in the Park in Downtown Davis. Visitors touched real preserved lungs, compared tubes of saturated and unsaturated fats, took apart anatomy models and saw glowing “germs” on their hands under a black light.

The last monthly booth featured science discovery activities about germs – locks and keys to match each antibody with the germ it could “unlock,” a game called “Infection,” and pretend germs that illustrated the importance of hand washing. Each month’s activities came from Health in Your World, one of Explorit’s Family Science Night programs.

Each booth featured a different health or human body topic and served between 35 and 200 visitors who were able to interact with activities, models and specimens. Topics included body systems, bones, muscles, lungs, nutrition, fitness, bike helmets, brain and germs.

Explorit Education Specialist Derek Woller brought the materials from Health in Your World each month, and got to interact with lots of enthusiastic visitors.

“People wanted to explore the science topics I brought and were eager to get their hands on the items at the table,” said Woller.

Explorit was a unique addition to visitors’ Picnic in the Park experience, and for the opportunity to provide that, Woller expressed thanks.

“Woodland Healthcare-Davis's support allowed for Explorit to come out to the park so you could learn something new,” he said. “A lot of times, people knew something vague, like, ‘Oh, that’s a brain model over there,’ but they had never actually taken one apart and looked at all the parts.”

Speaking of health and our bodies, Explorit and Woodland Healthcare-Davis would like to remind everyone to be proactive in staying healthy this winter now that “flu season” is here. Hand washing, doing the “vampire sneeze” instead of sneezing into your hand, and getting a flu shot are all great ways to avoid getting the flu virus.

By the way, Health in Your World and Explorit’s other Family Science Night, Science in Your World, are kind of like having a science museum inside your school for an evening. They are a great opportunity for students to share learning experiences with their parents and siblings in an informal setting.

Family Science Nights are usually set up in a school’s multi-purpose room or cafeteria. Find out more or reserve a program now at: http://www.explorit.org/programs/programs-for-groups (link).

From all the Explorit staff, have a happy Thanksgiving and healthy holidays this winter.
