With Thanksgiving and Winter school breaks coming up, Explorit has some fun student workshops and family events planned.  During Thanksgiving break we will be offering two workshops for grades K-6, as well as extended public hours.  During winter break we will have three public event and extended public hours days, and another K-6 workshop in January.

Thanksgiving week we have two workshops on Monday and Tuesday for student to attend.  Both will be form 9am-12pm and include hands-on science activities and a make and take activity for taking home.  Monday, November 26 will be “Fossils and Feathers”, which will compare dinosaur skeletons and how they compare to our living feathered friends, such as turkeys.  Tuesday, November 26 will be “Animal Adventures”, which will include a nature walk around Mace Ranch Park coupled with a discussion on season change and winter preparations, as well as meeting our resident insects and reptiles.  Fee is $50 for Members/$60 for Non-Members for each workshop, please call (530) 756-0191 to register.  Closed toes shoes are required and students will need to bring their own snack and water bottle.

Explorit is extending our regular public hours on Wednesday, November 27, from 10am-5pm.  Visitors can explore our Light & Sound exhibit, check out our Animal Alcove, get a closer look at objects at our Microscope Corner.  Our youngest scientists can explore the Discovery Den, which contains age appropriate toys, a terrarium with amphibians, and a fish tank of UV sensitive fish.  Regular admission applies for the day, $5 per person, free for Members, teacher, and for ages 2 and under.

During Winter break in December, Explorit has three events planned and one in January.  First up on Monday, December 23 we have “Sound and the Solstice”, which will include our main Light and Sound exhibit, explorations of the winter solstice, and hands-on fun with a variety of musical instruments and the opportunity to make your own in our Challenge Center.  The Winter Solstice event will be from 1-4pm and admission is $6 for Members/$8 for Non-Members, and ages 2 and under free.  Next up will be an extension of our regular public hours on Saturday, December 28 from 10am-5pm.  Regular public admission applies and will also include Girl Scout Gold Award Project – Women in Science – by Isha Thoreson.  Last up in December will be on Tuesday the 31st with a Noon Year Celebration!  Event admission is $6 for Members/$8 for Non-Members and will include activities and crafts from New Year’s Celebrations from around the world and time in our main exhibit.  Noon Year Celebration will run from 10am-1pm with a “Happy New Year!” at 12pm.  Our final winter break activity is our “Snowy Science” workshop on Friday, January 3, from 9am-12pm.  Join us and learn about the science of cold weather, snow, and ice.  Fee is $50 for Members/$60 for Non-Members, call (530) 756-0191 to register.

We look forward to seeing many of your during the school vacations to participate in science and our events.  Visit http://www.explorit.org/events for more information, or call (530) 756-0191.

Correction from last week’s article.  The original post stated the next time to see Mercury transiting the sun will be November 13, 2034, it will actually be November 13, 2032.  We apologize for the error.
