Special to the Enterprise

It’s that time of year again, almost time for the Perseid Meteor shower. This annual astronomical event fills the sky with meteors night after night for several weeks.

This year’s shower will run from July 17 to August 24, peaking on August 12. Join Explorit Science Center for a night sky viewing with the Davis Astronomy Club on Sunday, August 12, 7:00-10:00 p.m. at Fairfield Elementary school (26960 Co Rd 96 in Davis).

This event is free and open to the public. Donations to help cover facilities rental and janitorial services gratefully accepted.

The Perseid Meteor shower, named after the constellation Perseus from which the meteors appear to come, has been delighting observers of the night sky for thousands of years. At its peak, the shower can include more than 60 meteors every hour.

The Perseids are easy to see with the naked eye, no special equipment required. Plus, this year, the Perseids will peak on a moonless night in Davis making it even easier to observe other objects in the night sky.

Explorit’s night sky viewing the Davis Astronomy Club is one of three family evening events planned for this summer. Save the dates of August 18 for a special Family Science Night at Explorit and September 8 for our End-of-Summer Blast.
