Special to the Enterprise

Last Sunday nearly 400 stargazers joined Explorit Science Center and the Davis Astronomy Club to catch the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower at our viewing party. Clearing skies and an early setting moon made for optimal viewing conditions out at Fairfield Elementary School on County Road 96.

The evening began with hands-on astronomy activities and a safe solar viewing, courtesy of the Davis Astronomy Club. Then, as darkness fell, the heavenly show began with the occasional exclamation of “Ooh,” and “Ah!” from the crowd as meteors streaked across the sky.

If you missed this fun-filled event, never fear. The Perseid Meteor Shower will continue in the night sky through August 24, and will return again next summer.

Plus, there are still two fun family science events coming up with Explorit this summer. On Saturday, August 18, 6:30-8:00 p.m. one of Explorit’s flagship traveling programs comes home for a very special night of science in our museum. Explorit’s traveling Family Science Nights visit scores of schools in dozens of Northern and Central California counties each year.

You can catch it in Explorit’s museum gallery--dozens of hands-on science activities supporting the Next Generation Science Standards and rarely seen in our museum. This event is $5 for members, $7 for non-members, children 2 and under are free.

And that’s not all! The fun will continue into September with our Summer Science (Family) Celebration on Saturday, September 8, 5:00-8:00 p.m. Meet live animals from Lindsay Wildlife Experience, catch the U.C. Davis Chemistry show, and much more. This event is $5 for members, $7 for non-members, children 2 and under are free.

●      Be an informal science educator for a day! Explorit is looking for volunteers to accompany our educators into classrooms during the day and assist with presenting hands-on science to school children.
