Touched by science fundraiser supports Explorit

Special to the Enterprise

Just over 30 years ago, three local women developed a vision for a place where people of all ages, but especially children, could experience science in exploratory, hands-on ways.  Today that vision continues to be realized in the on-going events, programs and exhibitions of Explorit Science Center.

We invite you to join us as we celebrate Explorit’s past three decades of inquiry-based science and look to the future of informal science education at a very special “Touched by Science” event.  This fundraiser on Saturday, October 19 from 5:00-7:30 at 3141 5th Street in Davis will feature a dynamic presentation with guest speakers, a silent auction and much more.

Senator Lois Wolk will join Dr. Arthur Beauchamp, director of the Sacramento Area Science Project; Dr. Delain Eastin, Calif. Supt. Public Instruction 1995-2003; Dr. Phyllis Himmel of Marrone Bio Innovations and Dr. Paul Moller of Moller International for a discussion of the future of science and science education.

The quality of life in our community depends on the future of young children and their success in a world that is increasingly dependent on science and technology.  From commerce and education to research and being well-informed citizens, a knowledge of science and the fundamental role it plays in our everyday lives is critical.  Our diverse and passionate panel of speakers will explore the future of science in our community.

In addition to wine served in commemorative STEMware, hors d’oeuvres, dessert and coffee, “Touched by Science” will feature live music, a Back to the Future trivia quiz and a silent auction.  A full list of silent auction items is available at www.explorit.org, highlights include a fine selection of wines and original artwork.

Paul Moller will demonstrate his sky car and Citrus Circuits of Davis will provide an electrifying presentation.  Tickets are $75 in advance or $100 at the door and are available online at www.explorit.org or by calling Explorit at 530-756-0191.  There is a 15% discount for Explorit members and UCD Alumni Association members.

Or help us make this event extra special by volunteering!  We’ll need volunteers age 18 and up to help us the night of the event.  If you’re interested in lending a hand, please contact Sarah at saraht@explorit.org.

Your participation in this celebratory fundraiser will support Explorit’s continuing efforts to provide hands-on science in 15 northern California counties as well as at our museum site right here in Davis.  So join us as we raise a glass to our past heritage and imagine our future potential at “Touched by Science.”
