Special to the Enterprise

As we enter the final weeks of Explorit’s Feathers in Your World museum exhibition, we’ve had a few unexpected visitors: a family of wild turkeys!

Wild turkeys have been Davis denizens for years, frequenting the cemetery and downtown crosswalks. But this season, a female and five juveniles have been seen sauntering around Mace Ranch Park and dropping by Explorit.

Whether they are grubbing around the front lawn looking for tasty insects, or gleaning the leftover seeds under our bird feeder, these turkeys add to the rich wildlife of Mace Ranch Park. The park has long been home to barn and barred owls, gopher snakes, ground squirrels and much more local fauna.

And turkey feathers play a significant role in the Feathers in Your World exhibition. If you’ve visited, perhaps you’ve used a quill pen made from a turkey feather to design a bookmark. Or maybe you’ve examined different types of turkey feathers under the microscope to discover their different functions.

If not, there’s still time. Catch the Feathers in Your World exhibition in Explorit’s Anne Hance Gallery before it goes away at the end of summer. And be on the look-out for our upcoming exhibition Earth Explorations, opening Fall 2018.
