Summer Science Camp 2020

These camps emphasize active learning through age-appropriate experiments, hands-on activities and problem-solving. Explorit’s hands-on approach to science supports formal education's NGSS and CCSS.

We are closely monitoring the situation surrounding COVID-19 and will comply with any and all public health requirements and recommendations.  At this point we plan to continue to move forward with our 2020 summer camps.  For everyone's safety, Explorit will be staging camps exclusively outside so that we can practice and maintain safe social distancing guidelines at all times.  We will have ample shade structures and access to our restrooms and water facilities.  Because of our decision to move camp classes outside, we have also shifted the morning camp times to 8:00am - 11:15am so that participants can avoid the heat during our California summers.  We have also reduced our capacity for camps.  See below for amended cancellation policy.

Earth Explorations. Grades K-4
What forces help shape our earth?  Come learn how wind and rain can change a mounting, watch how water changes the landscape, and build a structure that can survive our earthquake shake table.  Learn how geologists study rocks and minerals, and how fossils can help us look into the past.
Wild and Wonderful Animal Behavior. Grades 3-6
Come learn more about animals and their behavior.  Take an in depth look at how animals survive in Mace Ranch Park and elsewhere.  How do they acquire food, water, and shelter, while coexisting with their human neighbors?  Why do some animals thrive in the park/neighborhood, while others stay away?  We will also meet, and spend time observing the various reptiles, amphibians, insects, and arachnids that call Explorit home.
Map It! Grades 4-6
Mapping, geocaching, and orienteering, Oh My!  Campers will learn how to read a compass, maps, and how to orient themselves.  They will search for and discover a nearby geocache, and will also make their own map of Mace Ranch Park!

Explorit Camp Policies

What to Bring, What to Wear

All programs will be in our backyard with shade structures. Campers must bring their own reusable water bottle. Children will have access to water refill station all day. Face masks are required attired for all attendees.  Have children wear comfortable clothing and close-toed shoes. Our hands-on activities are potentially messy but always fun. Comfortable clothes are advised – and consider sending sunscreen and a hat.

All campers must bring their own snacks and lunches. Also, some camps have food provided as part of the activities. To avoid possible allergic reactions, parents must complete the medical part of the Registration Form as thoroughly as possible.

Check in and Pick up

On Mondays: Check in begins at 7:30am and camp begins at 8am. Parents/guardians will sign children in at the sign-in table and provide Explorit with names of any adults who will be picking their children up during the week.  Camp ends at 11:15am.  Please be prepared to pick up on time. Parents/guardians please be prepared to show your photo ID when picking up.

On Tuesday-Friday: Check in begins at 7:45am and camp begins at 8am. Parents/guardians will sign children in at our driveway and students will be escorted to backyard camp by volunteers and staff.

For pick up, which takes place in the backyard, parents/guardians must sign out each child at the end of each day of camp. Parents may complete a permission slip to allow children to walk or bicycle to and from camp.

Temperature Monitoring

Campers, staff, or volunteers will be encouraged to stay home if they are sick. Temperatures of staff, volunteers, and campers will be taken daily upon arrival. Any individuals with temperatures > 99° F will be sent home. If an individual develops a temperature > 99° F during camps, he/she will be placed in an isolation area indoors with a staff member until a parent arrives. All county regulations and recommendations will be followed regarding contact tracing should COVID-19 infection occur.

Behavior Policy

Be safe, be respectful, be responsible, have fun! All children are expected to listen to educators and assistants and to treat other children and materials with respect. Explorit may call parents during the day if a child is injured, experiencing difficulty adjusting to camp, or has been involved in an incident with another child.

Late Pick-Up Policy

A late pick up policy is enforced in all camps. Parents who are late to pick up their children after the program is over at noon will be charged the following amounts:

  • 1 - 15 minutes late: no charge
  • 16 - 30 minutes late: $10.00
  • 31 - 45 minutes late: $20.00
  • 46 minutes to 1 hour late: $30.00
  • After 1 hour late:  $50.00, and the Police Department will be notified, if parents have not already contacted program staff.

Payment is due at the time of registration. Explorit accepts Visa or Mastercard. Fees cannot be pro-rated due to absences or vacation schedules.

Waiting List

Once maximum enrollment is reached for a camp, you will be given the option to add your child to a waiting list. If space becomes available in the camp, we will contact those on the list in the order that they were originally added. If a camp is full, consider adding your child to the waiting list.

Camp registration closes two weeks prior to the start of each camp. Camps that do not fill to a minimum of 5 campers will be cancelled with a full refund.  Camp maximum and minimum numbers subject to change with any new health regulations from the county or state.

Member Discount

Explorit Family, Grandparent, and Circle Memberships that are current are eligible for a discount on summer camp fees. You may renew your membership or purchase a new membership before you register for camps in order to receive membership pricing.

Cancellation Policy

Due to the ever changing COVID-19 situation we have amended our cancellation policy for the year of 2020. Your may cancel your summer camp enrollment for a full refund prior to noon on the Monday 2 weeks prior to your camp.  For example, the last day to cancel from the Earth Explorations camp of July 13-17 would be Monday, June 29 by noon.  If you cancel a camp within 2 weeks of your camp, we will try to fill your space from a wait list. If we succeed, you will receive a refund minus a $15 processing fee. If we cannot fill your space, you have two options: 1) receive a partial refund where Explorit retains $50 for administrative and supply cost, or 2) use your registration as a credit for future camps and workshops.
