Explorit's Fruit-Salad Quiz


SIX QUESTIONS:
Plants have Latin as well as everyday names. The Latin name for grapefruit is Citrus paradisi. Citrus is the Generic (genus) name; paradisi is the specific (species) name. Knowing some of these names is rather fun! Can you match the Latin, scientific names with the everyday names by using the descriptions ?

QUESTION 1: Arachis hypogea is a low growing plant with yellow flowers that grow into fruit pods that become pushed down into the soil. These pods have to be dug out of the ground at harvest. The seeds from inside the pods are eaten several ways - raw and also ground up into a buttery spread.

QUESTION 2: Prunus persica is a small tree. Its ripe fruits have a golden yellow, velvety skin with a crimson blush. We eat the fruits raw, canned or as a preserve.

QUESTION 3: Vitis vinifera is one of the oldest known cultivated palnts and has many varieties. The plant is a vine that bears clusters of yellow-green, or blue-red-black fruits. We eat the fruits raw, drink their juice, and preserve them by dehydrating them for later use.

QUESTION 4: Musa is the generic name for a cultivated tree-like plant that bears its soft, yellow skinned fruit in bunches of 120 - 200 individual fruits. Each bunch has 9 - 12 half spiral clusters or 'hands' of fruits. We usually eat these fruits raw but they are also preserved by dehydration.

QUESTION 5: Cucumis melo is an annual, trailing plant with many varieties. The large fruits which have a fairly thin, rough dry skin, are about 94 percent water and 5 percent sugar. They are eaten raw.
