Meet Explorit's Residents

Millipede500x329

African Giant Millipedes   "Millie" and "Mollie"
Scientific name: Scaphiostreptus spp, Lules spp, or Archispirostreptus species (Depends on their origin)
Habitat: Tropical and arid coastal forests of Eastern Africa
Time at Explorit: 6 months

The particular millipedes residing at Explorit were originally stars in the television show Fear Factor. After the show was done using them to terrify contestants they donated them to the Sacramento Zoo for their invertebrates exhibit. After the conclusion of the exhibit the millipedes were donated to the Bohart Museum on the UC Davis campus. Explorit was kindly given two of these well-traveled millipedes. When threatened these millipedes will curl into a tight ball with their head at the center. These millipedes also have the ability, when very stressed, to secrete a yellowish, but relatively harmless fluid.
