MORE INFORMATION

Trading silicon for carbon will eventually make it possible to build computer chips and electronic circuits that are at least one hundred times smaller than those currently in use, say researchers at NASA's Ames Research Center.
The carbon will be used to create molecule-size pipes called nanotubes. Applying materials with different electronic properties to the ends of precisely aligned nanotubes will create molecular electronic switching, transistor and amplifying components for use in computer chips.
