Question 1:
Which of these is likely to consume the most bandwidth?
a. Sending and receiving e-mail
b. Using 'meta search engines' to search the Internet
c. Listening to radio programs on the Web.
Answer:
c. consumes more bandwidth than a. or b.
However, excessive use of email can use huge amounts of bandwidth as sometimes happens when an Internet virus infects large numbers of computers and causes them to send (involuntarily) messages to all the addresses in their E-mail Address books.
Question 2:
Which of the following is not a modern Internet innovation?
a) PlanetLab
b) Internet2
c) MBone
Answer
a) PlanetLab is not quite real yet.
It is a research project that has been underway since 2002.
PlanetLab is planned as a new type of Internet that updates the original Internet infrastructure by adding 'smart routers' and changes the way in which we work with data on the Internet by storing programs and files on the Internet itself rather than on personal machines.
b) Internet2 has existed since 1996
Internet2 is a network of high performance routers and fiber optic links that move data about 3,500 times faster than DSL or cable connections.
c) MBone has existed since 1992
MBone is a system that allows many people to view the same real-time information simultaneously over the Internet - in contrast to standard Internet protocols that can pass each data packet only to the specific destination that requested it.
A 'router' is a physical device that forwards data packets (small units of digital data) between computer networks
What in the World is Bandwidth?
Bandwidth is a measure of the capacity of telephone wires, fiber optic cables or wireless waves to transmit Internet information.
Bandwidth usage is a measure of the amount of data transferred over the Internet. Each time you 'visit' a web page you create 'bandwidth usage' due to the transfer of the data of that page to your computer.
The information that is transferred over the Internet is of several types - most commonly text or image files. If a page you are viewing is a simple text page then the amount of bandwidth you have used is reasonably low, but if that page contains images then the bandwidth usage can increase dramatically.
For Example the text of the page you are viewing right now has 12 Kilobytes of digital information but if you include the small image to the left of this paragraph then the total amount of bandwidth required to display this page is 28 Kilobytes. If you are the only person who has received this page then very little bandwidth has been used. However, if a thousand people have requested the page during the past few minutes a larger amount of bandwidth has been used.
