The first scene was the one in which the New York subway was built beneath Manhattan Island. (Completed and dedicated in 1904.)
The second scene was the building of the Channel Tunnel connecting the South of England with France. (Completed and dedicated in 1995.)
The success of each of these ventures depended upon a sound knowledge of the geology of the area and of the specific characteristics of the types of rocks found there. The construction of the tunnels required knowledge of an applied science - civil engineering
