Robert Whitehead was apprenticed at age 14 as an engineer in Manchester. Later (1866) in Italy with his son John he invented a torpedo capable of running 700 yards at 7 knots. By 1889 he had increased the range to 1000 yards at 29 knots by improvements including adding a servo motor to the steering mechanism. Seven years later, adding a gyroscope had improved the torpedo's accuracy.
