Lazarro Spallanzani studied law at Bologna and accepted the chair in natural history at the University of Pavia. He was a founder of experimental biology working mainly with amphibians. He studied sterilizing by heat; showed that hot air is less effective than hot water for sterilization purposes; and showed that some minute organisms can live for days in a vacuum.
