Matthew Fontaine Maury entered the US Navy in 1825 but was lamed in 1839 and restricted to shore duty. As Superintendent of Charts and Instruments in Washington, he issued a unique Wind and Current Chart of the North Atlantic (1847), and later added one for the Indian Ocean. In 1853 he produced a Physical Geography of the Sea which was the first textbook of modern oceanography.
