Emil Adolph von Behring (Medicine, Bacteriology)

Emile von Behring was awarded a 1901 Nobel Prize for his work
on serum therapy, especially its application against diphtheria. He discovered
antitoxins and the successful treatment of diphtheria with a mixture of toxin
and antitoxin. This was a forerunner of the modern method for preventing rather
than curing the disease.
