Bernard Katz (Physiology)
Birthday: 1911, Leipzig, Germany
Bernard Katz studied nerve transmission within and between neurons especially those involved in muscle stimulation. He discovered that tiny packets of neurotransmitter (such as acetylcholine) molecules are responsible for much neural activity. These packets are now called vesicles. Katz shared the 1970 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for discoveries concerning the humoral transmitters in the nerve terminals and the mechanism for their storage, release and inactivation.
