William Sturgeon (Invention)

William Sturgeon, an electrician and inventor, was self
educated in languages and science. After leaving the army he set himself up as a
bootmaker but also lectured in science at the Royal Military College. A
practical man, he made the first workable electric motor, introduced the
soft-iron electromagnet, invented the commutator, and worked on thermo
electricity and on improving batteries.
