Rachel Carson planned to be a writer but a first year class in biology at Pittsburgh changed her plans and she switched from English to zoology. She told a friend biology gave her something to write about. She taught zoology at Johns Hopkins and Maryland and then joined the US Bureau of fisheries. Concerned about the world's global environment, she wrote radio scripts, articles and books and is best known for Silent Spring (1962).
