Jean Louis Agassiz had a lifelong interest in both fresh water and fossil fish. In 1846 he emigrated to America to study geology and natural history, and became professor of zoology and geology at Harvard. He published The Natural History of the United States in four illustrated volumes (1857-62). He believed not in Darwinian evolution but in successive independent creations.
