Jean Baptiste Lamarck (Natural History)
Birthday 1744: Paris, France
Jean Baptiste Lamarck studied medicine in
Paris until his interest turned to botany. In 1778 he published Flore Francaise,
a dichotomous botanical flora (key). In 1793 he turned his attention to the
animal kingdom and invertebrates. He developed four laws to explain evolution.
Three of these are compatible with Darwinian (February 12) theories but the
fourth concerns inheritance of acquired traits.
