John Gould (Ornithology)
Birthday 1804: Lyme Regis, Dorset,
John Gould learned bird-stuffing as a
teenager and in 1827 was made taxidermist to the London Zoological Society. His
wife was a talented illustrator and together they produced many beautifully
illustrated folios and monographs including Birds of Europe, Birds of Australia,
Mammals of Australia, a book on humming birds, and many others.
