Leon Foucault became physicist at the Paris Observatory in 1855 after publishing (1850) an account of his pendulum experiment to measure the Earth's rotation. His calculation for this experiment became known as Foucault's Law and others repeated his experiment with longer pendulums. He also measured the speed of light using rotating mirrors in a confined situation.
