Christian Friedrich Schonbein

Christian Friedrich Schonbein did not have
a university education but studied and attended lectures by such scientists as
Faraday (September 22) and Gay-Lussac (December 6) and was elected to the chair
of chemistry at Basle. He did classic work on ozone, including naming the gas.
He prepared cellulose nitrate (gun cotton) and investigated its explosive
properties but found no safe way to manufacture it.
