Carl Koller (Medicine)

Carl Koller studied medicine at Vienna and became house
surgeon there. Encouraged by his friend Sigmund Freud, he investigated the
medical properties of cocaine (an alkaloid from the coca plant) and introduced
its use as a local anesthetic in ophthalmology and in nose, throat, and dental
surgery. He set himself up as an ophthalmologist in New York.
