Theodore Schwann studied medicine at Bonn. Most of his important work was done in 1834-8 while he was in Berlin at the Museum of Anatomy. While making histological preparations he found and named the delicate myelin sheath surrounding nerve fibers; he discovered pepsin, showed that yeast causes fermentation, and recognized that animal tissues are composed of animal cells.
