Gaspard Monge (Mathematics)

Gaspard Monge was the founder of descriptive geometry. He combined methods of synthetic and analytic geometry, and laid groundwork for methods of modern engineering drawing. He also worked on the application of calculus to curve and surfaces in three dimensions. He was a close friend of Napoleon Bonaparte.
